Two problems and a joke

I currently have 2 problems with my 97 9k 2.0lpt, and wonder if they are related.
The weather here is about 20°C, but even on the shortest journey the cooling fan runs after I turn off the engine, sometimes only for a minute, but sometimes for ten or more. Water level is ok.
Also the temperature guage on the dashboard keeps dipping back to the off position, then coming back up to show the true temperature. (1/3 way up)
Thanks in advance guys, as payment a joke for you;
A guy hires a helicopter to get to Seattle airport, but the pilot gets lost. The passenger suggests flying close to a building and holding up a sign. The pilot does this, and the guy holds up a sign saying "WHERE ARE WE?". After a few mins the answer appears on a sign held up by someone in the building "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER". The pilot immediately turns the helicopter and flies directly to the airport. How did you know where to fly said the guy. Well the answer given was absolutely correct, but no use whatsoever said the pilot, so it must have been the Microsoft building, and I knew my way from there.
