I have a 12-inch Shiva subwoofer from Adire Audio (http://www.adireaudio.com), in a custom-built (by me) 1 cu-foot enclosure, run with an inexpensive 2*120 watt rms carver amp. The speaker sells for about $120 and is one of the best deals I've seen, more excursion than almost any woofer at any price, performs well in small boxes, and puts out a lot of good, clean bass. Check out the testimonials on their page, I first saw this woofer in Aaron Gilbert's setup which he posts a link to on this board from time to time, search the archives. I also have a hatchback. As far as the preamp outputs, if you have an amp that is seperate from your deck, as I did stock in my '93 CSE, than the deck is almost certainly putting out a preamp signal somewhere in the cables between it and the amp, the only question is where, and if you are willing to break into the cable (and probably have to disable the old amp if you go this route). You'll need crossovers if your new amp does not have them built in, or the flexability of the built-in ones is not up to your desires. If you have considered upgrading your deck you may want to get one with a subwoofer-only RCA output as well as normal RCA outs, this would avoid the crossover entirely (as long as you like where the deck decides to crossover for the sub out, or it is adjustable). I've personally got my eye on the new JVC MP3 deck as it has sub-out, and is half-decent looking (compared to the sony and Aiwa MP3 decks I've seen). Others on the board highly recomment Blaupunkt for CD/Tape decks.
