Recently I have been losing coolant. It appears to be coming out of the expansion tank cap (which is less than 6 months old). There are traces of coolant around the edges of the expansion tank and the large diameter hose that comes out of the bottom of it.

If the level is at the low mark and I start the engine the level will quickly rise and become visible in the expansion tank.

After a 180 mile drive today I have had to add coolant after about 100 miles and at the end of the journey the expansion tank was empty and the low coolant level light lit. The temperature guage is a the normal position, rising slightly on hills. I added some Bars leaks with 40 miles of the journey left out of desparation!

There is plenty of pressure in the system when the engine is running. If the expansion tank level is low and the pressure cap released carefullly then the level rises all the way to the top. There are no leaks visble from any of the other hoses. No traces of coolant in the oil. No smell of oil in the coolant.

I suspect I have a cylinder head gasket failure and the compression of the cylinders is pressurising the coolant circuit and forcing coolant out of the expansion tank cap. My mechanic has the car on Tuesday for a MOT test (annual road worthiness test) and wants to reserve judgement until he sees the results of the exhaust gas test. He thinks it could be the cylinder head gasket but wants to chck the whole system out.

Is there anything else this could be? Anything else I should check?

I have just been in Virgina last week and bought 3 x 10z bottles of Bars leaks (silver bottle) for preventative maintenance. It is about a third of the price in Pep Boys than UK motor factors (when it is in stock). However I don't think BL can cure this one. I was on the trip home from London Heathrow and so I had the 3 bottles in my luggage!
