If you have the automatic climate control (ACC), then indeed, there is a servo that moves the air mix flap. In the 9000, and many other cars, the heater core is always hot. The temperature of the air in the cabin is controlled by mixing cool outside or airconditioned air with warm air from the heater core.

The servo does fail, but most likely the problem is simpler. The servo connects to the flap by a plastic arm, and quite often that arm breaks. The flap then falls to either the cold or hot position - usually hot in summer, cold in winter.

Open the hood, and look at the base of the windshield. There you'll see a horizontal plastic cover that runs the full width of the car, with the air intake grill in the middle. Remove that cover. Just to the right (when facing the front of the car, also known as the passenger side on left-hand drive cars) of the blower motor box you'll see a shaft coming horizontally out of the blower motor box. It has an arm, and attached to that arm is a stiff wire that dissapears into the firewall, about behind the glove box. Make sure the wire is attached to the arm, and that the arm is attached to the shaft. If everything looks in good shape, then go to the Townsend imports site (http://www.townsendimports.com) and look in the technical documents pages under climate control - there you'll get information on running the self test.

If that arm is broken, you can get a repair kit from Saab for about $8. It works if the arm is broken off near the tip (most common). If it's broken near the shaft, you might be able to glue it. The real solution is to replace the flap - an inexpensive item, but a lot of labor to access. Think about replacing the heater core while you're in there, as they tend to leak after a few years - it's not the price of the parts, but the labor.
