Where to install water temp sender?

Would installing a sender in the heater hose off the end of the cylinder head give readings as accurate as those from a sender in the upper radiator hose? I have a source for a sender mounting tube, and they have many smaller sizes that I think would fit into the heater hose, but their largest tube has an OD of 40mm, which I think is a little too small for a secure fit into the upper radiator hose. Additionally, can anyone tell me the I.D. s of the upper radiator hose and heater hose off the end of the head?
Thank you all.
