The Bentley manual recommends sealant around the half-moon cutouts, and at the edge just above the exhaust manifold. I use Loctite 518. I've done a few valve cover gaskets, and although I've seen them seal without sealant, it sometimes doesn't work. Since I don't like doing the same job twice, I use the sealant. The engine is tilted, and I use sealant along the lower edge where oil will rest. Don't goop it on - just a thin bead will do. The only drawback to sealant is if you put too much on, and it squeezes out of the joint.
