replacing the clutch slave cylinder

I put a post up several days ago ( see bottom ) wondering about the cause of my clutch problems. I've since spent an afternoon under the bonnet determining what isn't leaking. I'm pretty sure that master cylinder and the lines connecting it to the slave and to the reservoir are ok. Around the inspection hatch on the transmission there seemed to be dark residue which I assume is leaking brake fluid from the slave cylinder.
I bought the car with high hopes of learning how to repair cars, I am thus uneager to spend a grand at the local saab garage on something I could probably accomplish myself and learn from. I have some friends with tools and experience that are willing to assist. I have two questions for the community:
(1) The clutch is spongy and generally doesn't work (though with a lot of pumping it can be persuaded). The master cylinder and the accompanying lines seem to be ok. Is there any other part that when broken could be causing the clutch to fail?
(2) Has anyone out there done this on an 87 9000T in their garage? Any suggestions one the best way to proceed?
thanks in advance,
oh, one more, where's the best place to get a new slave cylinder?
