I will take a 9000 with 4 snow tires over a 4x4 in any snow under 2 feet. Over 2 feet, the 4x4 has an edge largely due to ground clearance. This winter I stuck my 9000 turbo in the garage and ran a ford explorer. I put 4 snows on my wife's 9000. The 9000 was vastly superior in the snow.
Of course, the explorer had radial tires, not snows, but they were new. By the end of the winter, the snow banks at the end of our driveway were higher than the Explorer. The Explorer got stuck in the driveway. The Saab never did.
I imagine with comperable tires a four wheel drive vehicle should be better in snow. But I really don't know how much better. There are a lot of reasons to own a truck, I am not sure driving in the snow is one of them.
