I posted a week or two ago about failure of the 2nd gear synchro on two consecutive rebuilt (Eriksson) 5-spd transmissions filled with Saab synthetic. Matt at Eriksson suggested replacing with fossil 10W30, which I did. Anyway, too soon to tell if there's difference, but I'll post later on this.
There's no drain plug, so you have to pull the oil out through the filler hole. About one quart of oil remains in the tranny after this. I found it helped to jack up the right rear of the car. A 3/8" O.D. vinyl tube was about the widest I could fit in there. Wtih such a small diameter, siphoning was a drop at a time, so I used my vacuum pump and a reservior. Quite often, it seemed that the tube didn't end up in the pool of oil in there, and I needed to re-thread the tube many times before I was able to pull out oil. I then overfilled, drove it, drained again and filled to full line. Still, I figure I still have about 12% synthetic in there, so I plan to do it one more time.
I've heard you can also drain the oil by removing the speedo sensor next to the shifter input shaft. Has anybody heard of this? Can you get more complete drainage this way, and does this access point allow you to get down into the final drive area, where I figure that last quart of oil remains (lowest part of system)?
BTW, it shifted very smoothly overfilled (I put a lot extra in to try to dilute out the synthetic before draining - 5.5 qts. total), not notchy going into third like it always has been. When filled only to the full line, notchy again. What does everybody think about overfilling? Any harm in an extra quart? Any benefit?
