measurements that can be made but generally these valves are pretty reliable since the vendor change in mid 94. They generally do not have a graceful degradation failure mode- good today -bad tomorrow so testing is pretty nonsensical. I Don't know where Abbott can get information on a 3 year MTBF. that has not been my experience but I guess if you are in the business to sell alternative parts one would be interested. The valve did have a history of frequent failures early on but it was very random. I had three examples that were bad out of the box so who knows.
Using a fixed valve does not give the protection for the engine that the Saab valve does. It is possible to boost the engine to the detonation point and there is no safety cut back on pressure to prevent it with a fixed valve. I have only had one experience with a fixed pressure boost valve and it came to my shop with a piston holed from detonation. The o2 failed, Injectors ran lean, the engine destroyed itself because the knock detector didn't cut back the turbo fellow was pretty unhappy when he had to fly a thousand miles from home to pick up his car. BUT if one is careful, they do work pretty well.
