It's actually just a little more complex.

The cooling fan is mounted on the back (engine side) of the radiator. I say this because the AC fan is mounted on the front. It can be a little tough sometimes, because there are two fans.

The AC fan runs whenever the AC compressor clutch pulls in. The AC compressor cycles on and off depending on AC load.

The radiator fan turns on under TWO conditions. One: Just what you'd think - there is a temperature switch in the radiator, and when radiator coolant temperature exceeds a certain temp, the fan kicks on. Not engine temp, but radiator temp. If you have a two speed cooling fan (sensor has three wires, and there is a gold-colored rectangular resistor mounted on the fan), the fan comes on at low speed at about 90C, and at high speed at around 110C (numbers from memory).

Second condition - if the high pressure side of the AC system exceeds a certain pressure. This isn't overpressure, just a measure of how hard the AC is working. So SOMETIMES a little while after the AC compressor clutch has pulled in, the radiator fan will start running at the slow speed. But having the AC on does not mean the radiator fan will run all the time - just under certain conditions that you can't detect, because AC pressure is pretty unobservable without a gauge plumbed in.

If the car is running very hot and you don't think the fans are running at the right time, there are a few possible reasons. If you have the two-speed fan (and I think you do), if the fan resistor is burned out, the fan will only run at high speed, and only when the radiator is pretty hot. Or, the car is just running hot. I know my 9000 right now gets about half-way between flat horizontal and the red zone. Not too hot, just uncomfortable to watch. Only when the AC runs - it's great with the AC off (thanks to a 82C thermostat and fresh coolant). I am going to replace the radiator fan temp switch with a cooler (82C) version from Townsend this weekend, and I expect that to help a lot.

Good luck!
