Often this will happen if you drain a car battery completely, especially in a short period of time. I used to think there was a way most auto parts stores could test to see whether the battery was up to the task of holding a charge, but thinking about it now, I'm not sure this is the case. Don't rule out poor connections - clean both battery posts and the terminals with the wire brush thingamajig designed specifically for that. Also, wouldn't hurt to clean, or at least check check the connection to the car body, behind the battery. On my car, this was the point were the cable was badly frayed and not making good contact with the ring it's crimped into.
If the alternator always reads 13.7V or higher, your charging system seems to be in fine shape. Also, the battery light in the dash should come on (with the engine running) if your alternator is really about to go out..
