Consequence of not replacing a faulty wheel bearing

The wheel bearing in 1 of the front wheels was replaced in December last year. Seems the other one is about to go as I hear a subtle but high pitch noise once I reach 70 mph and keep on accelerating.
The dealer told me during the replacement in last December that if left alone, a faulty wheel bearing could lead to the wheel falling off from the car while travelling. Is this a bluff or is it real? I would prefer delay replacing the bearing until it is absolutely essential in order to save some $$$.
