Quite a few folks have done this, and no, you aren't crazy. You did get a big part of it right - it's only really feasable if you have a donor car. There is so much more than just the transmission - there is the shift lever, linkages, inside trim pieces, and if you want to be really into it, the EDU display.

Here's a question - Does your CD have traction control (usual if it's a turbo)? Will the donor have traction control? If so, things get a little more interesting. The traction control system is different between the automatic and manual. In the automatic, TCS only acts on the throttle; on manuals, it affects both throttle and brakes.
If your car has TCS and the donor doesn't, then you might as well convert over to non-TCS. Not only do you take the tranny and linkages, but take the throttle body, gas pedal, and gas pedal linkage, too.
If your car doesn't have TCS, then just take the tranny and linkages from the donor car and be happy.

If your car and the donor have TCS, it gets really interesting. You could just transplant the transmission, leave the TCS as it is (remove the Kick Down actuator because there is no kick-down cable), and see how that works. TCS should still work to some extent. You could transplant the TCS system from the donor - different gas pedal and pedal cable, different ETC (electronic throttle control) box, throttle body, that sort of thing.

As you can see, it can be pretty complex. If you have a donor car with a known good tranny, plenty of equipment, and time, it can be worth it. Anything less - no donor car, inadequate equipment, or wish to pay someone else to do it - then you're better off selling your car and buying one with a 5-speed.

Maybe some of the folks out there that have done the auto to 5-speed tranny swap have done it with TCS cars. Or maybe your car doesn't have TCS.
