I second the snow tire recommendation. I bought 4 BF Goodrich snows at Costco for my wife's 9000 and they were really excellent. I almost spent the big bucks for Hakkapelitas which are very popular here in Northern Vermont, but I am glad I didn't. Studs are legal here all year round. I have never tried them.
I also pay particular attention to what goes into the windshield washer fluid resevior. More than once I have bought windshield washer fluid in the summer which was not anti-freeze stuff and ended up with frozen fluid in the winter. I also generally replace the wiper blades in late fall.
Last winter I drove an Explorer. My wife's 9000 with the snows was vastly superior in all but the deepest snow. The biggest difference was on ice, where the Explorer was terrifying. The best thing about having the Explorer was not subjecting my 9000 to the craters that showed up in the spring.
