I've been using a replacement-type K&N on my '95 Aero since I purchased it two years ago. So far I haven't seen any alarming levels of silicone or other external contaminants in my oil, having tested it twice. On the positive side, (1) the filter needs to be cleaned only rarely, maybe every year or two, (2) there may be a slight performance gain since the restriction is less than a stock filter, (3) it uses the same air intake as stock, which is colder air outside the engine compartment. My big complaint about the open K&N's that reside in the engine compartment is that they injest hot engine air, which will hurt performance.
The drawback of these replacement filters is that they are expensive, about $50 as I recall, though I bought from an indy and it would be better to shop around on the web, etc. for discounts. Keep in mind, though, that once you buy the filter it can be cleaned and re-oiled almost indefinitely.
That reminds me, it's time for a cleaning.
