Check the engine number stamped on the block and this should help you identify its capacity and power output. This may differ according to the country and maybe even the state you are in.

Your engine could be a 2-litre (B204x) or a 2.3 litre (B234x) in-line four, but it is definitely not a V4 unless the car is small with a humpy roof - in which case you are posting on the wrong board!

My Haynes manual, based on UK cars, has the following information for models from 1994:

B204i 130 bhp, 177 Nm torque
B204S 150 bhp, 210 Nm
B204L 185 bhp, 283 Nm
B234i 146 bhp, 205 Nm
B234E 170 bhp, 260 Nm
B234LM 200 bhp, 323 Nm (manual)
B234LA 200 bhp, 294 Nm (automatic)
B234R 225 bhp, 342 Nm (manual Aero)

As Bill J says, this side of the pond a CS could have pretty well any engine apart from the Aero spec one. I think of CS and CSE as more trim optioins than engine options - but once again, this may very with world markets.

Generally speaking, the best way to get power from your car is to make sure everything is working properly. The usual suspects are vacuum leaks (if a turbo system), solenoid (aka BPC) and blow-off (hooter) valves, and plugs. Suggest you start by changing the plugs anyway, then search this site for information. Good luck!
