left side speakers & ignition switch

Fellow Saabernauts,
My '87 9kT has an odd electrical problem. The left side speakers will cut in and out. It's not that they act up over every bump, just the bigger ones. However, I find that if I turn the ignition off then on again, the left side will magically start working again (most of the time...the longer the time off, the more likely the speakers will work when the ignition is turned back on.)
While this was a really weak excuse to plop a set of Polk speakers in, just in case the problem was a loose wire inside the speaker(I replaced the rears while I was at it since one was missing when I bought the car and the other looked like Heck + didn't work), it didn't take care of the problem.
I can make the left side go _off_ by slamming my hand down on top of the dash above the clock but I haven't located the "Fonzi" spot to hit to make it come on and stay on.
Any ideas where to look for the problem, whatever that is? Do I need a new ignition switch? I dread taking the dashboard off again (did that once when the servo motor for the heater core went goofy), but I can do it.
Thanks much!
