Eriksson sells rebuilts, so nobody's is 'new'.
If you don't know someone that will rebuild the tranny, how do you know Eriksson will be $500 more?
I've had decent shops rebuild trannys for about $2200 to $2500. I'm under the impression that an Eriksson costs about $1800 shipped, and then assume another $600 or so for installation. I haven't had a quote from Eriksson, so I can't be firm on that.
For my money, I'd go with the Eriksson. The ZF automatic is a pretty tricky beast. I trust my tranny shop, but there was one transmission that they could NOT rebuild - they'd rebuild it, stick it in the car, and it would blow up in 5-10 miles. They finally got a tranny from a junker and rebuilt that. Thankfully, I had a fixed price for the job, so I didn't pay for three rebuilds. But it tells me that even a decent shop can have problems, and how do you know you have a decent shop? I understand that Eriksson dyno tests the trannies before they ship.
If somebody is going to give you a real low price (under $2K) for a complete rebuild, I'd worry that they were scrimping somewhere, and that you're going to be back on the Flatbed soon. Now, if there happens to be one part that died and the rest of the tranny is OK, that's different. But if the tranny has any miles on it, I'd have everything that rotates, rubs, or seals replaced, just to be sure.
