wide rims these rims needed 50 series tires, if some cars came with 6.0 inch rim (standard width) they could probably get by with 55 series tires. The part numbers I referred to prior were also identified by width the 91-92 sport chassis with 16 inch rims were all equipped with 50 series tires fitted to 16x6.5 wide Aero rims. Those who later tried to fit 55 series to these rims ran into severe rubbing problems. As you say all 205s are created equal but 1/2 inch in rim width makes the section a different shape and wider. That is the real difference. On the 93 CS bodies, the well was enlarged and a dish added to the inner liner at the front side where the 55 section rubs and the wing flare increased a little so the tire would not rub the flare bolts at the top. The discussion can easily be settled if one looks at the rim width stamped on the inside and the series car. If you have 6 inch width you can use 55s if wider, forget it. If you have 6.5s and a CS you are ok too.
