As mentioned in other posts, a screwdriver should work to get your hood open if you have an older car (like my '88). It will be a bit tougher on a newer one. Anyway, what may have happened is the wire hood release cable has come off the handle under the dash.

I have an '88 9kT and the wire kept coming off the pull handle. At least on my car, it appears all they did was put a metal sleeve around the thin wire cable, thread it through a hole in the handle and bend it. Not very elegant or reliable. Several times I had to crawl under the dash and re-attach the cable to the handle.

I finally got tired of this routine and decided to fix it. Under the hood there are two nice little metal "balls" with holes in them and hex head set screws that allow the wire cable to actuate the hood latches. I figured if I had one of those metal ball cable locks under the dash, that would keep the stupid cable from pulling out of the handle. I could not find these items at my local hardware store so I improvised.

There was plenty of extra wire under the hood so I removed the ball lock closest to the end of the wire. In place of the lock I simply bent the wire around a short 1/4" bolt, sandwiched it between two washers and secured it with a nut. Crude, but effective. I then attached the ball cable lock to the other end of the wire under the dash. I first cut off the end of the cable that had the metal sleeve around it so I could attach the cable lock to the wire (AFTER threading the wire through the hole in the handle). I pulled the slack out the wire, tightened the lock under the dash and the remaining one under the hood and it's been working fine for over a year. Guess I could have used the homemade bolt and washer cable lock under the dash, but there's more room to work under the hood.
