Well, the dealer finally fixed my '92 9000T! After months of dealing with problems galore, it should finally be good for another 100 miles or so. Here's how it all started...

In December of 2000 I purchased the car used from a local dealer. It was ~$8000 with 91,000 miles on it. Seemed like a really good deal and the car ran fantastic. In January, had a 95,000 mile service done to it before heading to Houston for a couple of months.

In february things went downhill. The engine blew a gasket and had to have it towed to dealer for repair. When they got it running, they said everything was okay....except the idle. What the f*#@! Sure enough, it stalled when cold and ran poorly when warm. Drove around for awhile and suffered further setbacks. The LR brake caliper leaked, I had an intermittent power steering loss issue, and the blower motor squeaked horribly when on.

By march I had seemingly resolved the power steering problem with a flush and refill of PS fluid, but that was the most headway I could make at the time. So I finally caved and took it to an independent to be fixed. He looked at for a day and came back saying he had looked all over but couldn't find the problem. So then I went to the dealer thinking surely they would be able to find it. Wrong again. They too looked at 'everything' and could figure it out. Sigh. I was stuck with a lemon. It no longer had the spunk it originally had and idled horribly to boot.

By June I returned home and was able to do some work in a garage (parent's) and decided to do the headgasket since a) there was oil in the coolant and b) I hoped it would resolve the poor performance of my car. After a long month of waiting and cursing I finally got it put back together. Only to have it still run bad at idle! I was unable to find any leaks (air or otherwise) and came up empty handed like the previous techs. Praying that the local dealer who has done good work on my brother's 900T could find it, I scheduled an appointment to have the idle, caliper, now muffler taken care of. After the first day I received a call stating that the caliper was this much..yada yada yada...and they couldn't find the idle problem yet. D@#! it all anyways. The dealer said they weren't done and it was driving the tech crazy trying to figure it out. This warmed my heart as I was afraid they would turn up something stupid like, "Next time you do a headgasket you might want to take that screwdriver out of the intake manifold..." At least I hadn't overlooked anything obvious.

Now here's the amazing part. After 5 months and almost 60 manhours the dealer called up saying they had some info on my car. I called back hoping against hope that it was good news. The service manager answered and replied that they had indeed found the problem at long last! It turns out the connectors under the drivers seat and at the throttle body had corroded and become dirty thus giving poor signals to the ECU. After cleaning and resetting them the car idle perfect! YES!!! The car I had enjoyed for such a short time was finally back.

The point of this rather long story is that if you happen to own a model similar to mine and develop a bad idle problem, do not overlook the connections under the drivers seat as well as the throttle body. Hopefully knowing this will help someone else avoid the painful task of trying everything imaginable to fix a bad idle.

And keep on Saabin!
