Good question. The plug to the computer is hooded and can be covered with a piece of tape. The chances that static electricity would build up across the two pins to set off the charge are extremely low. I disconnected my computer 5 years and 70,000 miles ago after a series of frustrating and expensive trips to the dealer failed to provide a lasting solution to the SRS flashing light problem. My annual inspection was coming up and I knew it wouldn't pass with the light on. Later, my daughter (5 foot , 3 inches) was learning to drive and I was worried that the airbag would do more harm than good, so I kept it disconnected.
If I ever sell the car I'll have to get it fixed (liability concerns), I just wish the technology was more reliable in older cars. I can't recommend this to anyone, but under U.S. law (I don't about Canadian regulations, Daren), the air bag can be disabled if you have a good reason, like a short driver. No dealer wants do it because they assume that they will be sued the first time the consumer is in an accident, whether it is justified or not.
