I did a clutch job last month and decided to take care of the gimpy 2nd gear synchro while I had the trans out. I quickly discovered that I couldn't do it myself (serious gear pullers and other even more serious tools required), so I let TRA Saab, the local dealer, do it for $250.
I took it to them on 6/20. I also took them the synchro ring and a crush sleeve. I didn't know if the crush sleeve was needed or what its function was, I just took it along just in case. As it turns out, the second synchro is on the output shaft and the crush sleeve is on the input shaft, so obviously there was no sense tearing the input shaft down just to put the crush sleeve on, but damned if the "tech" didn't do just that. They charged me $250.
So I reinstall the trans on 6/24 and the synchro works fine, but it pops out of second gear on downshifts. So on 7/1 I pull it out again and take it back to them. They replace second gear and the second gear synchro sleeve and charge me $600. On 7/5 it's done and I sling it back in. Exact same symptom.
Now I'm pissed and I tell them I brought them a basically functioning transmission and now it's popping out of gear and I want them to pull it, fix it and reinstall it, at their expense. Amazingly, they agree. I take it to them on 7/9 and after screwing around with it for a week, they replace second gear hub, rollers and springs. That's everything associated with second gear, folks. On 7/17 they get it back together, test drive it and, guess what? Same problem.
It sits there for the rest of the week while they fax the factory rep and generally kick their toes in the dirt. Then they start talking about mounts. The torque arm bushing is cracking so they decide to replace it. The aluminum housing breaks on the test drive so they replace the whole aluminum boss. Afterwards, same problem (of course). Now they call the factory reps and the reps say to replace the output shaft and bearings!
At that point, TRA decides the hole is getting too deep. They offer me three fourths of my money back and suggest I buy a rebuilt. Hey, what a freakin' deal this is! I argue vehemently that they need to put in a re-man'ed trans at their expense, but they'll have nothing of it. The best I can get is all my money back and get out of their hair. So, essentially, it cost me NOT ONE PENNY for them to RUIN MY TRANSMISSION!! Is this a DEAL, or WHAT?!
So now I'm back where I started, except I have good synchros now, but I can't downshift to second. This is about as good as a limp ... well, you get the idea ... functional, but no fun.
Anyone know of any good used 9000 trannies?
And does anyone have an opinion about whether the whole problem could be related to that crush sleeve? Replacing that was just plain dumb, but the "tech" obviously wasn't into asking questions or being analytical. What a nightmare ...
