I have to "feel" my way through fast shifts to #2. As for your earlier rant
about the dealer, that's the rational for getting turnkeyed work where you say "you fix it" and they're responsible. I just got through with a minor ordeal with Planet Saab in S.F. where, due to my bad back I had them put a clutch in it. Prior to that the drivetrain had zero lash in it. Got it back with a pronounced "clunk" every time I let the clutch out or stopped. The guy who writes service showed my that my upper mounts were cracked and had play, so I changed them. Clunk still there. Then he said it was the tranny mount. Changed that to urethane too. Clunk still there. Took it back today and he said it was ball joints. Told him that it was in the middle of the firewall and there ain't no ball joints there. Finally had a wrench put it on the rack. He started tightening a bunch of obviously loose bolts that connect the subframe and tranny and mounts, all of which were never torqued
down when the job was done.......so if I was their typical customer, would I have new lower mounts, balljoints, etc for about 2 grand, clunk thrown in
for good measure? I think most mechanics are just like other people, poorly
trained if at all and not very smart or good at what they do. I worked at a
bid VW agency about 35 yrs ago and of the 27 mechanics two were really smart and good, having gone through tech schools and machinist training, about 15 were typically mediocre parts changers, and the rest should have been detailers and trim guys at best. The two good guys could get into a tranny and have an idea of what needed to be done. No one else could.
