Need to Drain Coolant Before Replacing Top Hose?

All of a sudden, I lost over a quart of coolant, there is puddle of coolant over the transmission, and there is dried coolant spray all over the left side of the engine bay (battery, top hose, air intake, hooter valve, APC solenoid, etc.). After refilling the expansion tank and running the engine for a short while, using a mirror, I saw coolant dripping from the bottom of the top hose about where it makes the 90º bend.
So, it appears that there is a pinhole leak in the upper rad hose about where others have previously reported having a leak. The hose feels squishy all throughout its length, but I don't know what amount of squishiness is normal.
I guess replacing this hose is a fairly straightforward procedure? There doesn't seem to be much written about it in Haynes and elsewhere. (Hose costs $15 at the dealer.) Do I need to go through the hassle of draining the coolant before removing the hose? Will a lot spill out if I don't? When I squeeze the host, I can hear coolant sloshing about, and the level in the expansion tank rises.
