See Quasi's site on repairing floppy vents-

I am significantly more lazy, so I have a different solution. It doesn't require removing anything, or any dissasembly. Peek into the vent with a flashlight, and turn the knob. See that set of gears that mesh? Turn the knob one way and they rotate IN, the other way, they rotate OUT.
Now, take some electrical tape and tweezers or fine needle-nose pliers. (I use an old hemostat). Cut about 1 inch of tape, and then cut that piece lengthwise so it's narrower. This is a little tricky, but thread the tape through the slots in the vent (that's why a tweezer is required), and feed the tape into those gears while you turn the knob. If a little tape sticks out of the gears when the knob is turned all the way is OK - just don't have any tape sticking out the vent.
The problem is that the gears loosen up over time. The tape adds enough friction that everything works again. This isn't a permanent fix, but long enough. The tape either falls out, or gets tired after a couple/three years. But spending 5 minutes with some tape and tweezers every three years is a pretty good solution to me.
Good luck!
