Depends on what you want to do with the bars.
About the narrowest bars would be the distance between the seam between the top of the door and the roof. Since the support tower bends in slightly, there would be just a little bar extending from the tower.
I have two sets of bars - one that's about the minimum width, and one that extends about 4inches past each side of the car. When I carry four kayaks and a bicycle, I need all the width I can get. Yes, you have to be careful getting in and out of the car, but it gives you a lot of space up there. When I carry just two kayaks, I use the narrow bars.
So figure out what you want to carry first, then figure out the bar width. Getting narrow bars won't do you any good if you want to carry things wider.
Good luck.
