Water pumps fail by leaking - they don't usually lose efficiency.
Thermostats are always an issue. If it's more than about 2 years old, think about replacing it. If it isn't an 82C thermostat, replace it with one.
The air conditioning does put a big load on an engine. I notice a significant drop in indicated engine temperature with the AC off. Yes, there is a fan that runs when the AC clutch pulls in, but that doesn't really make up for the increase in heat load.
The best solution is to replace the thermostat with an 82C model, AND replace the fan thermoswitch with a cooler 82/100C unit. You have a two speed fan, low speed comes on around 90C, high speed at 110. With the cooler thermoswitch, the fan will come on sooner, and the temps will be lower. You can get a cooler thermoswitch and kit from Townsend (http://www.townsendimports.com).
If your coolant and thermostat are more than two years old, plan on a nice servicing - flush the cooling system and refil with fresh coolant; while the system is drained down, replace the thermostat and thermoswitches with cooler models. This will make a world of difference. Yes, it'll cost a few bucks, but it'll be MUCH cheaper than warping a head.
