Hi all...hope you can help.

The wife recently bought a 1990 9000 hatchback w/only 60K miles on it at an auction, has 65k now. Basically in pretty good shape, had to replace a CV joint, a radiator fan circuit, and do a full brake job, otherwise not a bad deal. She's indicated no recent odd noises, slips, or hesitations, and I've not experienced any either.

Last nite she tells me it had some problems with power when she hit the gas. Tach went up, but no acceleration sometimes. I drove it for a couple of miles, and it had some problems going up hills, otherwise seemed to run okay. Thought she may have gotten some bad gas (she'd just filled up at a station we don't use), or perhaps had a dirty fuel injector.

Drove the car to a nearby restaurant to have dinner, noticed a burning oil smell and what seemed to be a bit more than usual excessive heat being fanned from beneath, but saw no apparent leaks. Returned from dinner, engine seemed stronger. Went to a store a mile away, got back in the car, and was unable to pull out of the parking lot, which had a small incline. Reverse worked fine, but unable to pull forward in D, 1, 2, or 3, until I really leaned on the gas a bit.

Drove down a level road, came to a stoplight a half mile down the road, and the car ceased all forward motion. Pulled the tranny dipstick, which was dry. Filled with 5 quarts of fluid, and got some forward motion back, but certainly not what it should be. Parked car overnite and had it towed to a nearby tranny shop for repair. They normally don't do Saabs, BMWs, etc, because they sometimes have to pull the engines to get to them (the guy said past 900s were a particular problem), but they decided it was at least worth having a look, which is where it is now.

Anyone had this problem, or have any ideas what might have happened? Hoping that the tranny's not trashed and it's just a seal.

BTW: Last check of fluid a couple months ago looked perfectly fine. Dealer inspection of the car before we bought it indicated an expensive "transmission cooler" repair would eventually be needed, but by indie mechanic said otherwise.

Opinions appreciated!
