Hi,
Had this problem on my 87 9kt, might be the same solution for you...
There is a rod that runs vertically down the back of the hatch, which connects the latch handle to the latch itself. On each end of this rod are plastic fasteners that connect the rod to the mechanisms at each end. Probably one of your fasterners cracked and fell off.
Remove the fabric covering on the inside rear of the hatch. It's held in place by plastic fasteners that are at the top of the covering, next to the rear edge of the hatch's window. Also, you'll have to remove the inside hatch handle as well.
If one of the plastic fasteners has cracked, take it of and super glue it back together. After it is dry you should be able to put it back and all should work ok. Otherwise order a new fastener (you might have to buy the whole rod). I actually used electrical tape to connect the rod as a temporary fix.
