Depends - you can check some features, and gross operation.

The AMM measures airflow and converts it to an electrical voltage. It does this by heating a wire, and keeping that wire at a constant temperature. The more air, the more cooling, so the more heat it has to supply to keep the wire hot. Since the wire is in the airstream, it can pick up dirt and oil. There is a burn off function similar to a self-cleaning oven.

With the car off, disconnect the input side of the AMM. Leave the side to the intake manifold connected, along with the electrical connector. You'll see a wire screen, and behind that a fine wire (hard to see). Have someone start the engine, and rev the engine to over 2000 rpm for three or four seconds. Let the engine come back to idle, then shut it off. Watch the wire. Somewhere between 5 and 20 seconds after the engine is shut down, you'll see the wire glow very bright for a second or two - that's burn off. Reconnect the AMM intake hose.

To test operation, you'll need a voltmeter - preferably a digitial multimeter. You're going to connect the low side of meter to chassis, and stick the high side of the meter into the signal line. To do this, you'll have to CAREFULLY peel back the back of the rubber boot on the connector and poke into the proper pin on the connector. You'll then start the car, read voltages, rev the engine, read voltages. There are ranges that the AMM should be in. This isn't a great test, but it will tell the difference between a dead AMM and an OK one.

So - what pin number? Don't remember off the top of my head. I'll have to check the manual. It's different for different years, so watch out for someone that says - 'it's pin xx on my '88'. I'll look it up tonight, or perhaps someone else will have it handy.

Of course, let's start at the beginning - why do you suspect the AMM? What is the car doing (or not doing?)
