The SRS recall consists of putting a plastic cover over the SRS module. If there are signs of coolant leaking onto the module, they will replace the heater core.
The recall will take a skilled mechanic around 6 minutes. It took me about that long to check that they had indeed done the job on my car. The SRS module is directly behind the center console inside the car, on top of the
'hump' where the shift linkage goes. To see the SRS module, you climb into the passenger side footwell, and remove a couple of screws and peel back the carpeting on the side of the center console. The SRS computer is below the heater core, but there is a ton of stuff between. The SRS module is accessed from inside the car - the heater core, as you've descovered, isn't.
The tough part about the 'free heater core' part of the recall is that a heater core will stink of coolant and fog up the windshield long before you get a big enough leak to actually drip on the SRS module. Some dealers will change the heater core during the recall without any drips on the module. if you tell them there is a coolant smell in the car. Others will need to smell it for themselves. Yet others will require the SRS module to be floating.
I hope this helps.
