Are you sure it is defective? Mine has always hissed, and I've understood this is normal. If your car doesn't die after and immediate release after acceleration, the BPV is probably functioning properly. I.e., accelerate, depress the clutch while releasing the accelerator, and if the BPV is bad the engine will die or stumble.
