It won't hurt to clean the throttle plate area. Pull the big air hose off the throttle, and spray the throttle plate liberally with carb cleaner or Gumout. Open the throttle and clean the mating surfaces with a lint-free cloth (avoid paper towels - they leave lint and paper bits that can clog).
I'm not sure which fuel injection system you have in your '90, so it's tough to diagnose the rest. For example, do you have a dashpot on the throttle? Look under the throttle lever for a little disc with a plunger sticking out - the plunger catches the throttle when you release it. It should ease the throttle closed slowly - about 3 second to travel the last 1/4 inch or so. If it just slams shut, that can be your problem. Try adjusting the dashpot to catch the throttle sooner (too much and it'll raise the idle speed), or the damper may just need replacement.
No dashpot? Make sure you've got no air leaks, as usual. If you have an AIC valve, clean it out with some Gumout.
As to the shifter - it could be the linkage - there is a coupler in the shift linkage that's been known to fail. But it could also be your motor mounts. You get the most torque in 1st and 2nd, so the engine moves a lot. While driving in gear, rev the engine then just let off - does the shifter move? Check the torson link at the top of the engine (dogbone) - is the rubber badly cracked? That can be a sign of worn lower mounts. Visually check the lower mounts - the front lower is at the belt side of the engine near the front. The rear mount can be seen by removing the right front tire and looking in through the axle hole in the wheel arch. Slip a jack under the car and move the engine slightly. If the center of the mount moves, but the outside doesn't, you need new mounts. Those will make shifting harder.
good luck!
