When the car dies, does it sputter and die, or does it just 'switch off'? Does your car have Direct Ignition, or does it have a distributor cap?
If it just 'switches off', I'd suspect ignition.
If it has DI, I'd suspect the DI cassette, or possibly the crank sensor. If it has a distributor cap, it could be the hall effect sensor or the ignition amp. When the car dies, does it restart immediately? If it doesn't, does the tach needle bounce when you try and start it?
If the needle bounces, that implies the ignition amp/hall effect /crank sensor are OK. If not, check them out.
If the problem is fuel, I'd expect some sputter and dying. It could be a bad fuel pump, or a bad fuel pump relay.
Sounds like you'd better find yourself another mechanic. Seems like he's shotgunning the problem, and you're paying for both the shells and the targets.
