unless the valves poked holes in the pistons <cont> Posted by bryan [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: I don't see the reason to replace engine, maybe they know, Anders, Thu, 9 Aug 2001 01:02:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
you're going to be much better off having the cylinder heads removed and gone thru.
Makes me a little itchy that they know it has 'hardly any compression'. Once the timing belt breaks, usually the damage on a non-freewheeling engine (i.e. the piston WILL hit the valve if the cam timing gets off) is not too bad when the belt initally breaks. Unless you're bombing down the road and have a manual trans car, once the belt breaks a piston comes up, smacks a valve, then the engine stops and the damage is usually in only one or two cylinders.
What really messes things up is when the engine dies and the owner or trouble shooting mechanic will keep cranking the engine over to try and get it to start, and in short order every valve is boogered. Just wondering who did the cranking after the belt broke, them or you :)
Still not that big of an issue, the heads gotta come off anyway and valves are relatively cheap.
The factors on deciding whether or not to replace the whole engine are basically how many miles are on your engine and how much damage really was inflicted on the bottom end. If this is a 50,000 mile car that's been regularly serviced, I would only do the upper end unless there was considerable damage to the piston. If this a 125,000 mile car or the maintenance is spotty, welllll...I'm not overly familiar with the Vauxhall V6 in Saabs but I have seen a few and asked several indy mechanics what their experience is, and unfortunately the general consensus is it's not that durable of an engine. Soo, putting freshly redone heads on a bottom end that may not have that much in it would be false economy. Or as my grandad would say 'just like puttin' a silk hat on a pig' :D
Search the BB for info on the V6 as these are a lot less common and less understood than the 4-cylinders for info on where to buy, fix, and to maybe swap a 4-cyl in. tough luck, hope it works out for you!
