it's a little difficult to tell by checking suspension pieces by hand if they're good or not. It's hard to generate much force and sometimes a bad rod end or ball joint will *feel* ok in your hands.

Visually, look for torn boots. if the boot is torn, chances are the lube is washed out and if not bad, could be well on it's way.

Diagnosis is usually by driving. Bump steering (car deflecting to one side or the other when the suspension is compressed) can be traced to ball joints. Since you mentioned something weird happening over bumps, that's where I would look first. Sluggish or *soggy* steering feel is *usually* rod ends, but it could be related to the rack. Look for torn rack boots. Also don't forget to check the tires for proper inflation and correct wear, tires have a huge impact on handling.

No noises, clunks, thunks? Since your car is an Aero and you seem willing to tear into it, my advice would be, just replace 'em all while you're in there. Suspension components are elementary ( i said elementary, not easy!) to replace, and the car will drive soooo nice and it really is the most cost effective way to make your car 'drive like new'.
