... the 9000 Aero is faster than any 900 or 9000 (barring a couple of 9000 specials available only in parts of Europe, I believe). Acceleration-wise, the '93 has a slight edge due to slightly lower gearing, although '94-'97 has higher top speed. You'll get 0-60 around 6.5 seconds if you can get it going without wheelspin and about 150MPH top speed - fast enough? These figures are for the 225hp manual version (248lbft torque at 1800RPM!). 200hp auto version is slower and wouldn't be for you by the sound of it.
(0-60 times have never been Saab's forte due to the difficulty of launching a powerful front-wheel-drive car. They're much better once moving. Best to compare measures of real-life performance such as 50-70 for overtaking, for instance).
Other differences are lowered, stiffer suspension and 16" wheels (16" wheels appeared on later 9000s also, I believe). Not to mention the most wonderful seats ever fitted to any Saab.
Also, in the US, the '98 9000 CSE manual had the 225hp Aero engine (no Aero in '98). Not sure about suspension and it didn't have the Aero seats.
If you want more power than that, the 225hp engine has lots of tuning potential due to the larger Mitsubishi turbo that was only fitted to that engine and the Trionic system that was fitted to all Aeros and to other cars from '93 on.
I have a '96 Aero manual and I can't see me changing it for a long time. I bought it because it's the "fastest one".
