Starting problem

When I bought my 88 9000T last year, it had been retrofitted with a starting button on the dash. Turning the key to the start position does not start the car, it just gives a quiet click. You turn the key to the 'ON' position, push the button and she starts. The starter will turn over with the key out of the ignition or in the 'OFF' position, but will only start in the 'ON' position.
I want to sell the car and would like to fix this problem. I replaced the ignition switch since this is the easiest thing to replace in this system (I think). That did not help. Although I am a weekend hacker mechanic on my Saab and Volvo, I've never dove into the ignition system before. I'm assuming what they've done with this button is provide a hot lead directly to the starter that is switched at the dash. And once I thought about it (after I replaced the ignition switch) the switch must be working since it won't start unless the switch is turned ON. I'm thinking this button circuit is bypassing the solenoid on the starter somehow, but I could be wrong. Also, I think I'll have to remove the button circuit out of the system if I ever want it to start normally, since it is providing a switch to the circuit that needs to close when I turn the key to the START position.
Can anyone offer some suggestions on how to correct this patch job? Or should I just sell the car as is and not worry about it? It has worked fine all but a few times, when I've hit the button and heard a click. In that situation if I just tried a few more times it would eventually start.
