Thanks a million for your input. I wanted some input before forcing the old guide off. I followed your advice and the new guide is in place as we speak (write).
A bit of background: My 91 9kt had a chain fail at 65 and I have read a number of letters on the BB regarding the Balance Shaft gears wearing prematurely. I had some spare time and cash and decided to remove the timing cover and replace the guides, the BS chain and gears as well as the timing chain. I felt a bit neurotic spending over $600 in cash for these parts alone with nothing broken; however, once I got the cover off, I felt vindicated. The balance shaft gears were in pretty bad shape. Especially the one mounted on the crank. It was badly scalloped and its teeth were sharp and fragile in appearance. When comparing them to the new gear, the difference was marked! I am making an uneducated guess that it would probably begin to loose teeth (with no visit from the tooth fairy) within 10 to 15 K; and subsequently, damage my main bearing in the process.
I am also going to replace the Timing chain and the lower timing chain gear as it appears worn also, though not nearly as badly as the BS gears. The upper camshaft gears seem okay and I am leaving them alone.

Those of you with 90-92 2.3 litre engines beware! I don't know who supplied those balance shaft gears and Timing chains to the early 2.3 litres, but based on my experience, there definitely is a problem!
