That the thumb method works tells me that the latch mechanism is binding up just enough to keep the latch from releasing. It works fine from the inside because if anything, you're pressing OUT, reducing the forces on the latch. There is a fix, but you'll have to be careful.

When you close the door, you get (or should) a tight fit from the door seal. This makes for an outward pressure on the door against the latch. Pulling on the handle (no thumb) just adds to the pressure, binding the latch up. Now, assuming the door handle isn't loose, the other method is to release some of the pressure on the latch mechanism.

Open the door and sight along the latch opening to the pin on the door frame. Do they look like they line up OK vertically? Sometimes doors sag over time, dropping the latch in relation to the pin.

Basically, you can adjust the striker by moving the pin on the door frame. To loosen the pin, you need a VERY good 6 point wrench or socket (17 mm, I think). Don't even think about doing this with a 12 point socket. The nut is very shallow, and the pin tight - it likes to round. You loosen the pin slightly, move it to a new position, then retighten it and see how the door feels. Try moving the pin out and slightly down. Just a little movement should do it.

If the nut starts to round, soak the area in penetrating oil, and keep that up for a few days. Be patient. Mess up the nut, and you're screwed.
