Coolant Flush using cold water - bad for block/head??

When ever I do a coolant change on my 9000, I remove the thermostat, take off the lower rad hose, put a bucket under the rad and place a garden hose up the lower rad hose that I took off. Start up the car, turn on the garden hose, and let the system clean itself out. The question I have, is the cold water running through the lower rad hose bad for the block/head/head gasket in terms of temperature changes? Please, do share.
