I don't know where this idea to remove the battery cable with the car running came from!
Did the battery light stay on the entire time until the car died? Generally this does indeed indicate that there's a problem with the charging system. In my car, just the voltage regulator/brush pack needed replacing, which can be had for about $40 or less, and is easily replaceable. At least, in my '87 I can do it with the alternator in the car, from the top. From what I recall of the 2.3l setup, there actually seems to be a bit more room... take a peek, if you can reach the two screws holding the regulator onto the back of the alternator, you can replace it. May help to find someone with skinny arms.. If you have to replace the alternator itself, that is much more of a bear, as the right wheel, fender well liner have to come out, though once that's done, should be fairly straightforward I think.
