Just kidding! :) There are several things which can cause the symptom you describe. Worn control arm bushings could do it, but both front and rear are shot on my car, and I only get popping noises on bad roads, not any deceleration and acceleration. More likely in your case would be a worn motor mount, I'd say. The top one is easy enough to check, just look at both ends and see if there are more and larger cracks in the rubber bushing that it comes with (it is split when you get a new one). The lower mounts are a bit harder to inspect, as they're tough to see from the top. The best way to test, besides getting under the car and taking them out, is to put the car in neutral, have somebody rev the engine while someone else stands in front and looks at it. If the engine looks like it's going to jump out of the car, well... there's your answer. Also, in most cases, worn engine mounts also manifest themselves as a greater than normal movement of the gearshift lever under acceleration and decceleration.
Other possibilities include ball joints and strut bearings, but these I believe are more common if the problem occurs during cornering.
