I found Quasi's site very helpful, and chose option 2 which is to relax tension on the pulley. Around here, Murray's sells a long thin 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive tool to fit between the AC compressor and fender/ps fluid res. Frankly I used a regular 1/2 in drive socket to put more tension on the pulley, slipped the belt off, and released all tension. Then it was a matter of getting the pulley apart by turning the same bolt clockwise(left hand thread). Retensioning, I used a breaker bar on the wrench handle and slid the belt over the idler pulley. It worked, but I'm going to build one of those tools to maintain tension(a piece of metal with 2 bolts- instructions on Quasi's site).
Do you need to replace the entire alternator? You can replace the brushes and voltage regulators by replacing a pack ~$75- with same with the alt in the engine from the top. If the bearing is OK, should be enough. In the past, guys have also soldered in new brushes for just a few $$.
