Radio cassette installation

I have installed secondhand Kenwood radio cassette into a 1991 9000XS and had two leftover wires from the radio marked "memory" and "illumination".
Their was no problem with the illumination on the radio, but the radio presets dissappeared each time the radio was turned off. So I found a spare live cable in the wiring loom that did not go off with the ingition and connected the "memory" wire from the radio to this. Hey presto the preset radio stations now remained after the radio was switched off.
The problem is that the radio can now be switched on when the ignition is off and strangely the dash instrument lights remained on, and couldn't even be turned off by the ignition switch. This led to a flat battery within just a few hours. Please can anyone help with advice on how to keep the presets memory on my radio without flattening the car battery? Thanks.
