I think I remember someone stating that earlier models display normal running temperature more in the 10 o'clock range, or even a little higher. I think most of us are used to seeing a 9 o'clock reading as normal.
My '87 9kt temp gauge will stick at about 10 or 11 o'clock on summer days during normal driving, although I'm not quite sure when it kicks on (should check that this weekend). I should check the temp switches too...
