the old f/pump was a Walbro unit and the replacement was correct - being lucky is OK - but I suspect the parts guy knew there was little chance of it being a Bosch unit - just wish he'd said so in the first place.
BTW, taking the retaining ring off was a little more of an effort than anticipated and I was surprised by all the road grit that gets up under there. We were advised to use WD-40 to lube the connections to assist removal and I think that was helpful because that went very smoothly. We spent a lot of time cautiously easing out the assembly.
The only real stumbing block encountered was the reconnection of the f/pump to the old line. After a few failed attempts, we had to scramble around to find an appropriate replacement. That hard plastic is tough to work with. We cut the old one off and replaced it. Putting it back together took little time. Next time (hope there is not one) we should be able to do this with more confidence & much less time.
Thanks all for the input.
