I think the dealer is getting to the bottom of both my whistling turbo and (I hope) the weak mixture that caused my '96 Aero to fail the emissions test.
They told me this evening that they had traced the noise to the turbo/downpipe joint, which isn't sealing correctly. I shouldn't be surprised since I had trouble getting it to seal while fitting the 3" downpipe. The dealer is having the same trouble. I'm willing to bet they can't get a socket or spanner on the rearmost nut.
I struggled a bit to believe their diagnosis at first, since it started making this noise in May/June. However, I did have the old downpipe off in April to remove a stubborn O2 sensor. Maybe I didn't seal that properly either? The fact that it used to happen only when fully warmed up may support this (it happens all the time since I fitted the new exhaust).
This also ties in with Jay S's experience, where he had a similar noise that went away after having a new downpipe fitted, presumably sealed properly.
Bill Davies, I seem to remember, complained of the same noise and a weak mixture since having the same JT exhaust system fitted. I also suffer from a weak mixture, but this problem started before the new exhaust. Perhaps due to the old downpipe joint leaking as well?
The jury's out on the mixture problem until they can seal the joint, but perhaps the leaking joint is the cause? In the meantime, Bill, you might want to check this joint on your car. Perhaps yours is not as bad as mine and is starting to seal itself with carbon. I know you say your plugs are starting to return to normal.
